I was talking with a friend that I haven’t seen for a while and the conversation inevitably comes around to what has 2020 brought to your family and business/work life? She surprised me by saying that 2020 has been a year of huge blessing. Two babies were born to their family and she was so thankful!
I’ve been thankful as well in 2020: Thankful that I have a home to isolate in, thankful that my work moved easily to working from home, thankful my family is healthy. I’ve never been so thankful to live in the country. My horses did not know that anything was amiss in the world. They were, as always, happy to be fed. Nature carried on. The flowers grew and the weeds grew, also indifferent to any crisis.
What did I learn?
I like to have nice looking flowerbeds. It takes a lot of effort to make them look like it’s easy. In previous years I’d spend a lot of time working on the flower beds and at the end of the season I would lament that it had been so much work and I only sat in the yard to enjoy them a couple of times. I thought that enjoying the yard was sitting in it. I’m not saying I didn’t enjoy the work in the past. I think I always found satisfaction in it however what I learned in 2020 is to enjoy the gardening itself. Working from home a lot this summer made this click. I’d sit at my computer and then I’d take a break and pull a few weeds. I’d always been aware of the advice to enjoy the journey and live in the moment. However, I often fall short of this advice with my mind in my next task instead of the one at hand. I usually have a “gotta get this done” mindset. I learned to enjoy what I’m doing and where I’m at. I became mindful about gardening.
What were your key insights in 2020?
I would love to read about your 2020 insights in the comments. Did you learn a new skill? Pick up a hobby you hadn’t done in a while? Did you learn how to work or do business in a new way? Were there any key things you learned about your children and their education? Did you learn a new insight into yourself? Please tell me what you learned and what you are thankful for. I’m sure it will be fascinating.
